SAUSALITO ART FESTIVAL PRESENTS "SUMMERS OF LOVE" PHOTO AND POSTER EXHIBIT IN THE ALL-NEW WATER-EDGE GALLERY
Sausalito, Calif., August 20, 2007 - In the spirit of the 40th Anniversary of the Summer of Love, the prestigious Sausalito Art Festival presents a fascinating photo and poster exhibit. "Summers of Love" features some 50 framed photos of legendary rock bands and performers from the ‘60s and ‘70s by Aptos-based photographer John Gavrilis. A brand new gallery will house the exhibit on the water’s edge at Marinship Park/Bay Model Visitors Center, where the annual Festival is located. The 55th annual Festival that takes place over the Labor Day Weekend at Marinship Park/Bay Model Visitor Center also features The Summer of Love touring performers who will appear on the Main Stage on Saturday, September 1.
John Gavrilis has been a professional photographer for over 30 years. Born in 1950, and a native of Berkeley, Gavrilis grew up during the halcyon days of the San Francisco music era. His love for music and interest in photography enabled him to capture immortal portraits of The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead and other rock legends. Gavrilis now resides in Aptos, CA along the Monterey Bay, where he concentrates on "portraits of nature." Gavrilis still considered himself in the minority of photographers still using film (not digital) and making "traditional photographic prints" rather than ink-jet prints. His award-winning photographs are displayed in various corporate and private collections throughout the United States and Europe. For more information: www.GavrilisPhotography.com.
"Summers of Love" will include shots of rock legends Jim Morrison, Eric Clapton, The Grateful Dead, Grace Slick, Bob Dylan, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and The Blues Brothers, among others. A highlight of the exhibit will be a series taken at "The Last Waltz" - the final concert given by The Band in 1977 at Winterland, primarily for friends and family.
Gavrilis is also one of the 279 artists exhibiting at the Festival which features sculpture, painting, metalwork, photography, printmaking, wearable art, watercolor, fiber, ceramics and more. The array of art is complimented by two stages of non-stop marquis entertainment spanning the musical styles of rock, jazz, big band, pop, blues, folk and more. A third stage offers artful merriment for young children and families. Culinary temptations and premium beverages are served all day. The Festival is presented by the not-for-profit Sausalito Art Festival Foundation, which raises more than $350,000 to local organizations and charities each year.
